Bourgeois is our 2011 J'Ouvert presentation. The band takes its main inspiration from the Carnivals held in Trinidad during the early 1800's (1783- 1805). Carnival was brought to Trinidad by the French immigrants in the 1770's. Prior to that there was no account of Carnival being in existence. Before the French arrival, Trinidad’s population was very small, however after 1797 (British capture) it grew considerably including a very large number of African slaves. Carnival in those times was exclusively enjoyed by Society’s Upper & Middle classes which meant the slaves were barred from this event. It was only after the Emancipation of Slavery in the British Colonies (1833) that slaves were legally allowed to participate.

Before the Emancipation of Slavery early Carnivals in Trinidad were quite different. Pierre Gustave Borde's Historie de la Trinidad provides vintage accounts illustrating the French planters were a true rural aristocracy and authorized to wear the sword of Louis XIV. As a very close knit group the planters withheld their cultural standards and customs to the hilt and Carnival was one of these. In those days Carnival would commence from Christmas and ends on Ash Wednesday. It was characterized by “a contagious gaiety, brilliant verbal sallies, and comic buffoonery which made the subject of the morrow's conversation.”[1] This period was also marked by elaborate and lavish masked balls and the customary evening house visits in costume. After the British capture, Carnivals continued with formal masked balls held by the British Governor Sir Ralph Woodford at Government House in St. Ann's.

Although legally barred from Carnival, the slaves secretly partook in it during their day offs. Some of the talented ones were called to perform at the various masked balls. One account from 1826 tells that a slave called Ofuba the Chantwell was often called to perform the "neg deye potla" to much delight (Borde) and while another called Jack Bowell used to dance dress as a French Marionette (POS Gazette, 1826). During this time the slaves slowly began to influence the French Carnival with their African culture. This infusion culminated on the Emancipation of Slavery and started a period, known as the “Jamet Carnivals.” Many of the traditional masqueraders had their early roots here, like the infamous Jab-Molassie, the Dame Lorraines, the Chantwell and even the princely Pierrot. This is where Trinidad Carnival begins and the story of the Bourgeois in unfolds.

The band will consist of seven (7) costumed sections, modern in design and infused with early 18th century fashion aesthetics. It will be our most elaborate presentation to date to mark our 5th Anniversary in the Trinidad J'Ouvert arena (2007-2011).

Pai-Banan. the final and last section of L'echo

The Pai Banan is an extinct Masque that died out by the early 1900's. it was popular in Trinidad's rural districts, where they would appear J'Ouvert morning in small groups. The costume was simple and consisted of bits of cloth and banana leaves. On their heads was a turban or a fula that held cow horns or antennae. The face was covered by a papier-mâché mask, similar to those of the Pierrot Granade. They went around frightening people in the early hours of J'ouvert morning.

The MAS Jumbies version presents a more sinister visage of this traditional masque.

Our Road experience for Trinidad J'Ouvert 2010 will be further enhanced by the talent of Emperor Chin and Spin d' Music from Sydney, Australia.

DJ Emperor Chin hails from the SPIN D MUSIC Sound crew in Sydney Australia and is Australia’s ambassador for Soca music.

He continues to change the foundations of Dancehall and Soca music down under and is the official DJ for the Australian Miss Reggaemite contest, Dancehall Queen Finals and the biggest soca fete Carnival Craziness.

DJ Emperor Chin has collaborated with local dancehall sound systems and supported international touring artistes Junior Reid, Mykal Rose and Anthony B.

Internationally, he has played in Trinidad & Tobago's Carnival with Tribe, along with the best Soca DJs including Excalibur, 4 Play, D Bandit, XTC, Black Chiney, Back To Basics and Renaissance. He is also the road DJ for Mas Jumbies J'ouvert band.

In 2006 he introduced podcasting to SPIN D MUSIC and in 2007 launched SPINSANITY on SDM Internet Radio which is captured by global listeners across all continents.

In 2008 he launched TRIBE Australia to expose Trini culture in the land down under and was approached by VP Records to host the launch party for REGGAE & SOCA GOLD.

In 2009 SPIN D MUSIC celebrated their 5the year of Tizik Thursdays, Sydney’s weekly Caribbean event at Jackson’s on George in the heart of Sydney and launched the SDM Cup showcasing the best of the best selectas across Australia.

He also produces regular mix tapes Strictly Big Chunes and you can hear him live on SPINSANITY every Friday night live on air with up 2 di time Reggae Dancehall and Soca. Look out for his residency at Sydney’s new weekly event “JAMROCK” blazing soca & dancehall vibes to the massives.

L'echo de Bandes de Congo

Presenting our 3rd section L'echo de Bandes de Congo, it is priced at TT$350.00/ US$57.00.

This is an extinct masque that was once popular at the turn of the 19th century. The costume or attire was very similar to that worn by estate workers at the time; simple with just a straw hat and knee high trousers. They wore Cashew and Palmiste beads necklaces around their necks and sold Jumby bead charms to bystanders. One of their distinctive practices was the chanting of "African" prayers and satirizing religious practices while on the road.

They were once a familiar sight in Port-of-Spain in the late 19th and early 20th century. These vendors who exclusively were women would be seen and heard peddling their various array of goods from door to door. They dressed in the fashion of a la Martiniquaise and carried trays above their heads with the different array of goods, usually sweets and sweet meats.

Echo du Village draws its inspiration from the Juve Masque that once populated the rural and surbubs of POS. Masqueraders will have the option of white body paint. The all inclusive package includes security, alcoholic & non-alcoholic bar, breakfast (ham & hops; salt fish & bake) and Irish Coffee as a starter.

Loyalty Masqueraders will continue to receive their Discount and may also register friends using the same discount (one time usage).
